Description"When legislators debated an amendment to the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage at a constitutional convention in February and March, GLBT youth in their teens and early 20s turned out in droves at the Statehouse, joining veteran GLBT activists in calling on the Legislature to vote down the amendment. But while many of the young people at the Statehouse were willing to make their voices heard, they were unprepared for the anger directed at them by the throngs of protestors who also converged on Beacon Hill to register their opposition to same-sex marriage.

"I think it was a real eye-opener for a lot of people," said Maggie Crowley, 21, the chair of the youth committee for MassEquality, the coalition organized to oppose the amendment. "When you haven't come across that [level of anger] before it's very intense."

Wes Ritchie, 19, another MassEquality youth committee member, said many of the young GLBT demonstrators were shocked at the behavior of the adults on the other side."
