Description | By Gov. Gary Locke
If we don't pass Initiative 884, the Education Initiative, what will we tell our children?
How will we explain that we couldn't provide preschool for the children from low-income families who need it most?
What will we say when we're asked why Washington still has some of the most crowded classrooms in the country? Why didn't we provide extra help before and after school for students struggling to meet our new, higher learning standards?
Why didn't we provide space in our state's community and technical colleges, and our four-year universities, when we've known for a long time that we needed to accommodate an additional 33,500 students, just to keep pace with increasing demand?
It's time we deliver on the promises we all make to our children. Initiative 884 will make sure that every child will be ready to succeed the day he or she starts kindergarten. It will make sure every student will have the best teachers, the small classes and the help needed to succeed in school. Initiative 884 will make sure every student who works hard will have a place in a community college or university if he or she desires it, and financial assistance if needed. |
