Polls unclear on front-runner in Florida race

ORLANDO - Days before their divisive race ends, Bill McCollum and Mel Martinez will have to share the coveted title of Republican front-runner in Florida's U.S. Senate campaign.
Martinez, former U.S. housing secretary, has surged 9 percentage points in a month and -- for the first time -- has pulled ahead of McCollum by six points, according to a Mason-Dixon poll of 500 likely Republican voters conducted Monday and Tuesday.
McCollum, however, leads by four points in another survey of 400 Republican voters conducted during the same time by InsiderAdvantage, affiliated with the Florida news website, Sayfie Review.
Though the specifics of the polls differ, they illustrate the same fact about the Aug. 31 winner-take-all primary -- it's a horse race, with a stable of undecided voters who range from 18 to 26 percent of the electorate. |
