Description | DECATUR – State Senator Barack Obama (D-Chicago) today called for Congress to pass legislation doubling ethanol production for gasoline to 5 billion gallons by the year 2012. Doubling ethanol production, Obama said, would create jobs here at home and make America less dependant on foreign oil.
“In an increasingly more hostile and dangerous world, neither American security, nor our economic potential, can afford to be held hostage by some half a world away because our nation is too dependent on others for our energy,” Obama said. “That is why I’m calling on this Administration and Republican leaders in Congress, when they come back to work after Labor Day, to act quickly to break out the ethanol provisions from the stalled energy bill and pass them immediately.”
According to a study by the Illinois Farm Bureau, this would reduce crude oil imports by 1.6 billion barrels while creating 214,000 new jobs here at home. |
