Description | The state halted a cleanup at an abandoned Army base in Alabama after discovering that a company with a $50 million contract to destroy unexploded shells instead moved some behind trees, where they were found covered with leaves and dirt.
The company, Tetra Tech FW Inc., is related to one of the firms hired by the government to dispose of unexploded ordnance in Iraq, the military said Tuesday.
Officials said an inspection of a wooded area at the old Fort McClellan in Anniston last month uncovered 13 mortar rounds that were supposed to have been removed for disposal around July 1. Instead, the rounds were moved a few yards behind a tree.
