Description | The Supreme Court of Florida on Tuesday rejected financial wording in a ballot proposal to get rid of a planned high-speed rail system, leaving both sides of the controversial issue declaring victory.
In an "advisory opinion," the court said the ballot item improperly states that dropping high-speed rail "could" save the state as much as $51 billion during the next 30 years.
Those figures should be tied to the phrase "probable financial impact," says the opinion, which calls for a rewrite of the ballot item.
The court also said the measure, put on the November ballot with a petition of about 500,000 voter signatures, overreaches by stating the potential savings from dropping the rail plan could be as much as $5,700 per household. |
