Description | INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- A state board on Wednesday rubber-stamped Gov. Joe Kernan's plan to provide relief to some homeowners hit hard by the court-ordered reassessment, but a Republican lawmaker questioned the wisdom and legality of the move.
The Property Tax Replacement Board, whose three voting members are part of Kernan's Democratic administration, agreed to advance about $20 million to counties so they could offer a "circuit breaker" to those whose payable 2003 tax bills were more than 2 percent of their homes' assessed values.
Of 35,108 parcels the state has identified so far as being eligible, more than 31,000 are in Lake County. Most of the loan money - nearly $15 million - would go to Lake County, a Democratic stronghold where many homeowners were hit hard by reassessment and other tax factors. |
