DescriptionNumbers Indicate Weakening Of Support For Governor

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- A new survey shows that the race for governor is tight, with Gov. Craig Benson in a statistical tie with a potential opponent.

The WMUR Granite State Poll of 509 New Hampshire adults shows that in a race between Benson and Democrat John Lynch, Benson leads, 46 percent to 39 percent, with 14 percent undecided. With the 4.3 percent margin of error, the race is a statistical tie.

If Democrat Paul McEachern beats Lynch in the primary, the race would be nearly as close, with Benson leading 48 percent to 36 percent, with 15 percent undecided.

The poll was conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, and pollster Andy Smith said that the numbers indicate more of a potential rejection of Benson, rather than support for a challenger.

"I think there's an anti-Benson sentiment out there," Smith said. "He's running against two unknowns, but it's competitive races. Voters have turned against Benson, to a certain extent."

Approval ratings for Benson have dropped 9 points since April, with 45 percent now approving of the job he's doing and 40 percent disapproving, with 14 percent neutral.
