Description A new survey released today shows 55% of Pennsylvanians agree that the state is on the "right track." But there are reasons for concern: for the first time since 1996, a majority of Pennsylvanians say they are worse off financially than a year ago. A majority agreed on raising revenue through a cigarette tax and gambling, but were widely opposed to sales, income, and property tax increases.

The survey -conducted prior to Senator Santorum's recent controversial comments- showed President Bush with a 63% approval rating, Governor Rendell with a 50% approval rating, Rick Santorum with a 45% approval rating, and Arlen Specter with a 43% approval rating. The survey- which was not limited to Republicans- showed 82% did not who Pat Toomey is.

The survey is conducted at Millersville University for the Philadelphia Daily News, Fox Philadelphia, the Harrisburg Patriot, and the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. Dr. G. Terry Madonna directs the poll and Professor
Berwood Yost is Head Methodologist.(04/25/03)
