JUNEAU--Gov. Frank Murkowski's approval ratings as governor are almost half what they were when he served in the U.S. Senate, several pollsters say.

Murkowski's approval rating was as high as 70 percent when he was in the Senate, but for about six months his percentage approval rating has been in the high 30s and low 40s, according to three Alaska pollsters who work for Republicans and Democrats.

Political observers attribute the drop in approval to deep budget cuts Murkowski's first year in office and other unpopular decisions, such as appointing his daughter, Lisa Murkowski, to fill his vacated seat in the U.S. Senate.

A Murkowski spokesman, Kevin Jardell, said he's leery of opinion polls and would not comment on them. Jardell added that he had not seen any polls conducted by the administration.

"He's shown leadership and made the hard and tough decisions," Jardell said.

Marc Hellenthal, an Anchorage pollster, said Murkowski's current numbers are similar to those of former Gov. Bill Sheffield when he almost was impeached in 1985 on grounds he had allegedly manipulated a state office lease and lied to a grand jury.
