Description | Four follow his 19% lead in GOP race for Congress
By Theo Helm
JOURNAL REPORTER
Ed Broyhill narrowly leads the field of Republicans in the 5th Congressional District primary, but four candidates are close behind with less than two weeks before the vote, according to a districtwide poll.
The poll of 625 likely voters in the Republican primary found that 19 percent would vote for Broyhill, 14 percent would vote for state Sen. Virginia Foxx, and 13 percent would vote for Vernon Robinson, a member of the Winston-Salem City Council.
The poll by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. found that 35 percent were undecided. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Eight percent said they would vote for Jay Helvey, and 7 percent for Nathan Tabor. Joe Byrd drew 2 percent, and David Vanhoy and Ed Powell each drew 1 percent.
The candidates are running for the nomination to replace Republican Rep. Richard Burr, who is running for the U.S. Senate. The 5th District includes much of Forsyth County and stretches north and west to the Virginia and Tennessee state lines.
The only candidate with broad support is Broyhill, "and I think a lot of that has to do withthe old family name," said J.Bradford Coker, the managing director of Mason-Dixon. |
