DescriptionIt's the kind of rap that makes politicians afraid to call themselves "liberal." The GOP's favorite wholesale accusation against Democratic candidates: They want to find new ways to tax you.

But Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ron Sims is not only embracing the characterization, he's hung his political future on it.

Sims has increasingly focused his campaign on the singular issue of the state's tax structure, including his politically risky promise of an income tax.

Sims is counting on that issue -- one he says no other politician will discuss -- to catapult him over the Democratic front-runner to victory in September's primary election.

"We are commanding the issue that's driving Democratic voters -- which is tax reform," said the King County executive.
