| Description | Each detail at Anderson Gardens reflects its creators' philosophy
When John Anderson bought land for a house on a bluff overlooking Spring Creek Road in Rockford, the site included 15 acres of swampy, rough terrain.
Today, those 15 acres are home to the highest-quality Japanese garden in North America.
That came to be thanks to the meshing of two creative minds. One belongs to Hoichi Kurisu (Ho-ee-chi Ku-ree-su), a Japanese-born landscape designer whose vision and touch mark the garden throughout. The other belongs to Anderson, a local millionaire whose appreciation of the Japanese culture and business-like attention to detail were perfect complements to Kurisu's plans.
In the 26 years since the work began, Kurisu has dreamed and sketched. He's also come to the gardens frequently to set boulders and plant trees exactly as he wants. Anderson, in the meantime, has paid the bills, hired the best gardeners and builders he could find, and spent many nights himself, on hands and knees, planting pachysandra on garden hillsides. |
