Description | Salazar leads in early Colorado caucus results
The Denver Post
Democratic Senate candidate Ken Salazar took a solid lead Wednesday in early returns from the Colorado precinct caucuses, picking up 54 percent of the votes with 43 counties reporting. He needs 30 percent to get on the Aug. 10 primary ballot. One of Salazar's Democratic opponents, El Paso County educator Mike Miles, trailed with 24 percent, and 22 percent of the Democratic delegates were uncommitted. "This was a real strong showing by Salazar, with less than a month on the campaign trail," Democratic Party spokeswoman Julie DeWoody said after Tuesday's straw poll at about 3,500 precincts.
In a presidential preference toll taken by Colorado Democrats, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts led with 59 percent, followed by Dennis Kucinich, who continued to stump for votes in Colorado even though Kerry sewed up the nomination in March. Kucinich had 12 percent, followed by former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean with 2 percent, Wesley Clark and John Edwards with 1.5 percent each and Al Sharpton with 0.5 percent.
DeWoody said it would take several days to get the final results, including precincts in Denver and Jefferson counties. A candidate can get on the Colorado ballot by winning the support of 30 percent of the delegates to emerge from the caucus and state convention. The Colorado primary is for state-level and congressional offices only. The state did away with its presidential primary to save money. |
