BOSTON -- A new poll by the University of Massachusetts shows residents are evenly split over a proposed legislative compromise.
A new poll shows that Massachusetts residents are evenly divided over the state Legislature's compromise constitutional proposal that would ban gay marriage but allow civil unions for same-sex couples.
The University of Massachusetts poll of 463 people found that 47 percent of those asked backed the proposal, while 47 percent opposed it.
The poll was taken March 30 through April 4, the week after state lawmakers approved the amendment 105-92 in a Constitutional Convention.
The poll also found that 17 percent strongly opposed both legalizing gay marriage and authorizing same-sex civil unions. |
