DescriptionFrench mayors ready to perform same-sex marriages

Gay couples in France may be able to tie the knot for the first time this spring after several French mayors said on Thursday they would be ready to conduct same-sex marriages in their city halls. Civil unions between same-sex partners have been allowed in France since 2000, but gay lobby groups say these fall short of legal marriages as they do not come with benefits such as adoption rights or the same fiscal advantages. French law does not limit marriage to a man and a woman. One Paris district mayor has also said he was ready to marry gay couples in the City of Lights for the first time. "I am ready to unite people of the same sex in a move to fight against discrimination and for the rights of homosexuals," Jacques Boutault, mayor of the second arrondissement in central Paris, told reporters.

Although the weddings could be challenged legally, homosexual groups say the move is an important step as it could open a wider debate on gay rights in France. "It would be a symbol like in San Francisco. It might not be legally recognised but it would shake people up," said Ronan Rosec from gay rights group SOS Homophobie.
