Description | North Carolina's ex-commissioner of agriculture is getting to spend time in the country.Meg Scott Phipps arrived last week in a rural West Virginia women's prison known as "Camp Cupcake." The minimum-security prison sits on a West Virginia hill.
Phipps pleaded guilty last fall to five felonies including extortion, after being convicted of perjury in a Wake County court in a case involving illegal campaign fund raising. Her attorneys requested Alderson.
The prison, opened in 1927, has no metal fences. Inmates play volleyball, tennis and softball in their spare time.
Former campers include singer Billie Holiday and President Ford's two would-be assassins, Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme and Sara Jane Moore. In 1987 Fromme briefly escaped from Alderson but was recaptured two days later.
Phipps may get some high-class company of her own.
Alderson is a possible destination for domestic diva Martha Stewart. |
