Description | Bournemouth developed from a barren heathland in the 19th Century as a result of the Victorian love for the seaside. The tourist industry still forms a vital part of Bournemouth's economy - more than 12,000 are employed in tourism, which accounts for more than 13% of all employment. During the past 20 years Bournemouth's economy has been strengthened by the rapid development of the insurance, banking and finance sector. Much of this has been concentrated in Bournemouth East. Companies including Chase Manhatten Bank and Abbey Life have been attracted to the town and its outskirts by comparatively low rents and low wages. This seat avoids any chunk of Bournemouth's town centre and takes most of its population from the coastal suburbs of Boscombe and Southbourne. Inland it also includes Pokesdown and Moordown. |
