U.S. Supreme Court settled boundary dispute dating from 15 Dec 1838 between Iowa and Missouri by rejecting both states' claims, choosing instead the Indian boundary line run and marked by John C. Sullivan in 1816 .

Missouri legislature extended CLARK's boundary N of boundary between Mo. and Iowa Terr.; CLARK overlapped VAN BUREN (Ia.) and created a dispute settled by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1849. Iowa maintained control of area throughout the dispute.
