Named by locals for Ted Herring who owned a gas station and store with his brother at the mouth of Poudre Canyon. Herring opened the filling station on May 22, 1922, the opening day of fishing season. The filling station and store became a popular meeting place and stopping point for those enjoying the outdoor offerings of the canyon. Local's began calling the place "Ted's Place" and the name has stuck.
Herring died in 1963. The original buildings were razed in 1989. A Shell gas station currently sits on the location of the old Ted's Place.
