Description |
Farthest northern and least populated region of the Federation.
Chukotka is named after the Chukchi people, largest of seven native peoples residing in the area.
A clause in the 1977 Russian Constitution was revised on December 15, 1990 to specify that autonomous okrugs are subordinate to the Russian SFSR. However, Chukotka is the only Okrug not subordinate to an Oblast.
