Not an actual political race, but shows what persons were held in extremely high regard by the nation.
Only 28 Persons have lain in state or honor in the Rotunda of the U S Capitol.
A law enacted in 1923, following the death of President Harding, provides that every President is entitled to a state funeral and to have his (or her) body lie in state. The law also provides that the decision as to whether this will be accepted or not is left up to the family of the late President with input from Congressional leaders.
The last person to lay in state was US Rep. Don Young, in March 2022.
