Description |
West Devon and Torridge is one of the largest seats in England, stretching from Hartland Point, as far west as the extremities of Dartmoor, and inland as far as Chagford. It is sparsely populated and is predominately an agricultural community, specialising in dairy farming, with a large fishing and forestry industry. The tourist industry is increasing but is concentrated on the coast. There is a large rural community, with a few market towns such as Okehampton, Holsworthy and Torrington. This is, broadly speaking, a reasonably affluent area and is naturally Conservative, and yet the Liberal Democrats have held the seat since 1995, when the incumbent Tory MP, Emma Nicholson, defected to the party. She chose not to fight the seat in 1997, but the seat was retained by the party in the form of John Burnett, a local farmer and solicitor. Mr Burnett's majority in 2001 was an extremely slender 1,194 votes. The MP is not contesting the seat again.
