Description |
Hertsmere, on the border of greater London, contains the affluent commuter town of Potters Bar, site of the 2002 train crash which killed seven people and injured over 70 when a WAGN service from London to King's Lynn crashed in the south of Hertfordshire. The railway arrived in 1850 and Potters Bar's growth is largely down to the good transport links. It is where the north London suburbs meet rural Hertfordshire. In the south of the region lie the more urban areas such as Borehamwood, an area where Labour has been able to rely on a good deal of support. A big estate was built there in the 1950s to provide overspill housing from London. In 2001, turnout in Borehamwood was low. As a result, the Labour vote fell. Labour came close to winning Hertsmere in 1997, but even at the tidal wave of change on a national level, the Conservatives kept their edge here. Bushey is also in this constituency and has a significant Jewish population. Outside the main towns and further north lies attractive countryside and affluent rural communities, a Conservative haven. The town also claims to be "the Hollywood of Britain". Elstree Studios - where the first Star Wars trilogy was made, and, more recently, the Big Brother house - is located in this constituency.
