Description Broxbourne sits at the most northerly tip of Greater London (bordering Enfield) in south-east Hertfordshire. The River Lee runs along its eastern border. Broxbourne is famed for its ancient woods, waterways and wetlands and rolling farmland. A network of public footpaths and treks attract walkers from far and wide to enjoy the diverse landscape. Its population is based on a number of commuter towns and villages including, apart from Broxbourne itself, places such as Waltham Cross, Cheshunt, Hoddesdon, Wormley and Turnford. Waltham Cross is a busy commercial town with a pedestrianised high street and is famous for its Eleanor Cross, a series of which were erected in 1291 to mark the overnight stops of the funeral cortege of the wife of King Edward I, Eleanor of Castille, on its way to Westminster Abbey. The seat is home to many skilled workers who work in the light industries that have sprung up along the M25. The 2001 census found that the service industry was the largest sector of the local economy, employing 66% of all workers. There have been some commercial developments in the area but the constituency is mainly residential with many private estates build in the past 25 years. This has brought concerns that the rural areas and greenbelt land may be under threat. Conservative MP Marion Roe has represented the seat since 1983 and has continuously resided on the Tory backbenches, apart from a brief spell as a junior environment minister from 1987 to 1988. Since 2001 she has been made a Dame and stands down at this election after 21 years as the MP.
