Description |
Formed in 1996, this new constituency is extremely rural. The historic villages of Biggleswade and Sandy (home of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds), both with fewer than 12,000 electors, are the largest centres of population. Bedford, just outside the seat, is the nearest large town for most residents. The villages nearer Bedford are home to those who commute to Bedford and to London, which is accessible via the M1, A1, A6 and the train to King's Cross, making the area a haven for wealthy commuters. It has traditionally been a centre of brick making (the London Brick Company is based here) and agriculture. These activities have more recently been supplemented by the development of industrial and technical parks. Conservative Alistair Burt won with 49.9% of all votes in the 2001 General Election.
