Description Derbyshire North East surrounds Chesterfield more or less on three sides. It contains the settlements of Dronfield - a dormitory town for nearby Sheffield - and Clay Cross, which achieved notoriety in the early 1970s when the Labour council refused to implement the Tory government's Housing Finance Act. The councillors, including Dennis Skinner's brother, were surcharged for their defiance. Labour's Harry Barnes has been MP here since 1987 and in the 10 years to 1997 his majority trebled from 6,000 to 18,000. It fell back to 12,000 in 2001 but is still 32% over his nearest Conservative rival. However, this is a mixed constituency, 99% white, rural in the west and parts of the south and residential in areas bordering the Peak District. But there are also one or two Conservative supporting villages. The attractive landscape, combined with the new residential developments and the disappearance of coal mining, continue to change the nature of this constituency. Some engineering and industry has, however, survived. Mr Barnes is stepping down at this election.
