Description This is a predominantly coastal constituency which lies where the river Tyne meets the North Sea in the south east corner of the old county of Northumberland. There are two parts to Tynemouth. One is an area of middle-class housing around the shore, not dissimilar to other seaside seats which were gained by Labour in 1997. The component parts of this are Tynemouth itself, Cullercoats, Whitley Bay and Seaton Sluice. The other part is similar to neighbouring areas which were dependent on shipbuilding and heavy industry and have suffered decline accordingly. Call centres have expanded in recent years, providing a major source of employment here, as does the Cobalt Business Park where Orange and Proctor & Gamble already have offices. Unemployment is relatively low for the area. Tynemouth falls within North Tyneside District Council which is currently under no overall control. However, since 2004 the Conservatives are the largest party having overtaken Labour. The split is now 27 to 26 and seven for the Liberal Democrats, rather than the 21:29 previously. Nearly all Tynemouth's councillors are Tories. This used to be the Conservatives' only seat on Tyneside, held by Neville Trotter. But Labour's Alan Campbell won it in the 1997 landslide and held it in 2001 with a majority of 8,678 or almost 20%.
