Description |
This riding in southeast Alberta, completely surrounded by the riding of Cypress Hills-Medicine Hat, takes in much of the city of Medicine Hat. The municipal boundaries form the north and west borders of the riding, while the South Saskatchewan River forms the east border. To the south, the border is formed by the South Saskatchewan River, the Trans-Canada Highway and Carry Drive.
In Medicine Hat, retail provides more employment than any other job sector, while the health and social services sector is number two. Household incomes, at $49,359, are well below the Alberta average, and the number of residents considered low income, at 11.5 per cent, is slightly above. Almost 16 per cent of residents say they're of German origin. About eight per cent are immigrants. Fifty-four per cent say they were born in Alberta, a low figure for a riding outside of Edmonton or Calgary.
