Description |
Created in 1993, this northeast Calgary riding is bordered to the east by the city limits, to the north by McKnight Boulevard, to the west by 36th Street, and to the south mostly by 32nd and 16th Avenues. The 2004 redistribution shifted some voters from Calgary-McCall into this riding, while moving others from the riding and into Calgary East. Calgary-Cross's population is 40,713 - the fourth-highest in the province.
Manufacturing and retail are the big employers here. The average income is $61,159, just under the provincial average, and more than 15 per cent of families are low income. More than one-third of residents are immigrants - more than anywhere else in Alberta. Nine per cent of residents are Muslim, 9.6 per cent are Sikh, and five per cent list Punjabi as their first language. In the riding, 41.6 per cent of residents were born in Alberta.
