Description |
Newly formed Battle River-Wainwright is a large rural riding in east-central Alberta, sweeping from Camrose in the west to the Saskatchewan border in the east. The riding is mostly the same shape as the pre-redistribution riding of Wainwright, save for the addition of the eastern sections of the old Ponoka-Rimbey and Wetaskiwin-Camrose ridings. This change has added the communities of Bawlf and Rosalind. Other communities here include Wainwright, Daysland, Killam, Sedgewick, Provost, Castor and Coronation.
The average income here is $53,091 a year, and homes in this riding are the second-cheapest in the province at $92,787, on average. Just over eight per cent of residents are considered low income. Agriculture is by far the biggest employer, but the oil and gas sector is also important. Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is here as well. This is one of Alberta's least multicultural ridings, where less than four per cent of residents are immigrants and barely one per cent are aboriginal. About nine per cent of people are of German origin, while almost three-quarters were born in Alberta.
