| Description | Connecticut's Start as a State
Connecticut’s Declaration of Independence Day is considered June 18, 1776. On this date,
Colonial Governor Jonathan Trumbull issued the Independence proclamation. This followed
the Connecticut General Assembly two days prior, ordering the delegates to the Continental

Unlike most of the other 13 colonies, Connecticut felt no need to draw up a new constitution
for the State of Connecticut. From "Connecticut Constitutional History, 1776-1988" [Link] by
Wesley W. Horton, "the General Assembly declared in 1776:
------Be it enacted...That the ancient form of civil government contained in the Charter from
------Charles the II, King of England, and adopted by the people of this state, shall be and
------remain the civil constitution of this state, under the sole authority of the people hereof,
------independent of any king or prince whatever."
Technically, from 1776 until 1818 (when the 1st Connecticut Constitution was adopted),
Connecticut operated under the Colonial Charter, but as a State instead of as a colony.
