The President is commander-in-chief of the Afghan armed forces, head of government and the nation's head of state. The President also appoints and chairs the Cabinet, which is approved by the House of the People (Wolesi Jirga), the lower house of parliament.
The Cabinet is one of the three branches of the Afghani government as set forth in Afghanistan's Constitution. Members of the Cabinet include the First and Second Vice-Presidents and officials from the Chief Executive Department. The President reserves the right to add members of other government institutions to the Cabinet, including Supreme Court judges.
The President is directly elected and serves a five year term, maximum two terms.
