This riding includes the eastern part of the city of Laval, where several companies have their head offices. It stretches north from Rivière-des-Prairies to Rivière-des-Milles Iles, east to the top of Ile Jésus and west to des Laurentides Boulevard and Rue Riopelle.
The workforce depends on manufacturing and the service industry. The average family income is $66,683 with an unemployment rate of 5.4 per cent.
According to the 2001 census, 77 per cent have French as a mother tongue and more than eight per cent have Italian as a mother tongue. The total immigrant population is more than 11 per cent. Over 10 per cent of the population have less than a Grade 9 education, but more than 11 per cent have a university degree.
In 2004, the riding's name was changed from Laval East to Alfred-Pellan. The previous western boundary was the CP Rail line and Boulevard des Laurentides. The riding was established in 1966 as Duvernay. The name was changed from Duvernay to Laval East in 1990. There was no change in the 1996 redistribution.
