Description |
Assembly of four former enclaves of the Établissements français dans l'Inde (the French Settlements in India; also called 'French India') established by the French East India Company in 1673 with a capital at Pondichéry.
India seized control of the four enclaves, Pondichéry, Yanam, Mahe, and Karikal, from France on November 1, 1954 - a fait accompli before a treaty was signed. France did not acquiesce to their seizure until August 16, 1962.
India renamed Pondichéry to the similar-sounding "Puducherry" on September 20, 2006, as a nationalistic wave of name-changing was sweeping India.
A fifth enclave, Chandernagore, was ceded to India on May 2, 1950 and absorbed into West Bengal on October 2, 1954, which renamed it Chandannagar.
