Description |
Group of 36 islands located in the Laccadive Sea formerly known as the Laccadive, Minicoy, and Aminidivi Islands. Islands were uninhabited upon their discovery by various peoples, including the ancient Greeks, Muslim traders and the Portuguese, and ten of them still remain so.
India seized them upon the departure of the British in 1956.
The official language is Malayalam. Capital is Kavaratti. Visiting the islands is restricted and an entry permit from the local government is required.
