Chechen Republic of Ichkeria
Chechnya
Chechnya is a small mountainous region in the Russian Federation. Bordered by Georgia to the south and the Russian constituent republics of Ingushetia and Dagestan to the East and West, the Connecticut-sized enclave straddles the strategic crossroads between Europe and Central Asia. With its capital in Grozny, there are over 1,000,000 citizens in Chechnya. Most are practicing Muslims.
The independent government of Chechnya is led by a popularly elected President and Vice President, both elected for a five-year term on a single ticket. The Cabinet of Ministers, led by the Premier of the Chechen Republic, is charged with the administration of Chechnyan affairs. A popularly elected parliament has jurisdiction over legislation. The Russian Federation maintains a governor for Chechnya, though he is not recognized by the independent government of Chechnya.
Modern Chechnyan history is one of great bloodshed and oppression. In 1859, the Russian Empire under the military leadership of the reigning Czar, conquered Chechnya and claimed its territories. In 1943, Germany invaded Chechnya and in the next year deported 800,000 Chechnyans to Central Asia accusing them of collaborating with the Nazis. In October of 1991, the Russian Administration in Chechnya was overthrown by Dzhokhar Dudayev, who would later be elected Chechnya's first President. On November 1 of that year, Dudayev declared Chechnya's independence from the Russian Federation. Russia responded by declaring an informal war on the Chechnyans. On October 29, 1999 the Russian army invaded Chechnya after ten days of heavy air raids. Since then, Chechnyans have been forced to defend themselves and their republic's independence.
The Russian Federation and the United States do not recognize Chechen independence. Islamic countries have recognized independence.
