Description |
The President is the head of state, the head of government and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. The president serves for five years, two term maximum.
A parliamentary election held on March 2, 2020 was forced into recount on allegations by the opposition PPP-C of vote-rigging by the ruling APNU-AFC coalition.
The stakes are high as the next government will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to distribute windfall oil earnings to themselves and allies, which would allow one or the other political coalitions to become Guyana's preponderant political presence for some time to come.
