United States Marine Corps
The United States Marine Corps falls under the civilian command of the Secretary of the Navy. The USMC and its predecessor institutions were organized to mirror the British Royal Marines which was created on October 28, 1664 during the Second Dutch War. The Continental Marines was established on November 10, 1775 by an act of Congress to aide their British counterparts. The War of Independence however turned the Continental Marines against the British. On July 11, 1798, President John Adams signed a law creating the USMC.
As the expeditionary arm of the United States Military, the USMC is almost always the first group sent into battle. They pave the way for incoming Army and Navy forces in military egagements.
