Description |
This riding is located on the eastern shore of the St. Lawrence River across from Montréal. The riding contains the former cities of Greenfield Park, LeMoyne and St-Lambert and part of the former city of Longueuil, lying southwest of Chemin de Chambly, Boulevard Curé-Poirier West, Rue Notre-Dame-de-Grâces and Rue de Châteauguay.
There is a mixed economic base in this riding, including manufacturing and retail trade. Almost 15 per cent of the population has a university degree, while 11 per cent have less than a Grade 9 education. The average family income is $64,643 and unemployment is 7.9 per cent.
According to the 2001 census, about 76 per cent of the riding's population has French as a mother tongue while 14 per cent list English. There are more rented than owned dwellings, 56 per cent compared to 44 per cent. The total immigrant population is almost 12 per cent.
In 2004, nine per cent of Longueuil was added in the northwest. The riding of St-Lambert was created in the 1996 redistribution from 35 per cent of Longueuil, 27 per cent of St-Hubert and 19 per cent of La Prairie.
