Description This Winnipeg riding lies west of the Red River, running from the Assiniboine River in the north to Wilkes Avenue, Waverley Street and Bishop Grandin in the south. It runs from Shaftesbury, Corydon, Park Boulevard North in the west to the Red River in the east.

Although it is mainly a residential riding, retail trade, government services, health and social services, manufacturing and education give the riding a diverse economic base.

The immigrant population is almost 15 per cent. Less than four per cent of the population have an education below Grade 9 and more than 25 per cent have a university degree. The average family income was $80,512 in 2001 and unemployment was 5.1 per cent.

The riding was first established in 1924 but was abolished in 1976. The riding was recreated in 1986 from 51 per cent of Winnipeg-Fort Garry, 19 per cent of Winnipeg-Assiniboine, 15 per cent of St. Boniface and nine per cent of Winnipeg North Centre.

In the 1996 redistribution, 81 per cent of Winnipeg South Centre remained unchanged, while 12 per cent of Winnipeg South and four per cent of Winnipeg North Centre were added. In 2004, 86 per cent were unchanged while 13 per cent of Winnipeg South were added.
