The southern boundary of this riding is the southern limit of Winnipeg. The western boundary is Brady Road (the western limit of Winnipeg) and McCreary Road. The northern boundary is Wilkes Avenue and the eastern boundary is Waverley, Bishop Grandin, St. Mary's Road, Novavista Drive and Seine River.
The top two industries in this riding are health and social services (almost 10 per cent), followed by retail trade.
According to the 2001 census, five per cent of the population listed French as their mother tongue and four per cent listed Chinese. The total immigrant population is more than 16 per cent. Only three per cent of the population have less than a Grade 9 education and almost 22 per cent have a university degree.
The average family income was $78,012 in 2001 and unemployment was 4.8 per cent.
This riding was first established in 1914 and abolished in 1976. At that time, a major part went into Winnipeg-Fort Garry. Winnipeg South was re-established in 1986 from 49 per cent of Winnipeg-Fort Garry and 34 per cent of Winnipeg-Assiniboine. In 1996, 59 per cent of the riding was unchanged and 24 per cent of St. Boniface was added. In 2004, 87 per cent of the riding remained unchanged.
