Himalayan Indian state hosting India's highest peak. Formerly known as the Kingdom of Sikkim, India absorbed the land through underhanded means by instigating anti-royalist riots through its ally, the Sikkim State Congress party. India subsequently sent in its army to seize Sikkim's capital city of Gangtok and the Royal Palace, deposing Sikkim's King, known as the Chogyal, on April 1975.
A referendum of uncertain honesty (97.5% approval) sponsored by Indian agents (the Indian army sent in a contingent of up to 40,000 troops to 'safeguard' each ballot box) was immediately held on the 16th of May, 1975. Sikkim was instantly proclaimed India's 22nd state.
