India's smallest state by area and richest by GDP per capita, equal to two and a half times that of the country.
The majority (around 66%) speak Konkani. 450 years of Portuguese colonization brought with it a majority Catholic state on admission to the Union, which has dwindled to around 30% of Goa's population at present day.
The state is split in two districts, North and South Goa, with a capital renamed Panaji from the Portuguese, Pangim.
