Description Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

The United Kingdom is governed by a parliamentary monarchy. Governance is the jurisdiction of Parliament from which the Prime Minister is elected. Parliament in the United Kingdom is a bicameral legislature consisting of the House of Lords and the House of Commons. Both chambers have the responsibility of examining proposals for new laws, scrutinize government policy and administration and debate the issues of the day.

The first parliament was summoned in 1295 by King Edward I. Edward's parliament consisted of two Knights from each county, two Burgesses from each borough, and two citizens from each city. Several parliaments have come and gone throughout the course of British history with kings and queens forming new parliaments and dissolving them as they saw fit. Having lost absolute authority, the Monarch no longer has such power.
