Info | John M. Sullivan is a Democratic politician, member of the Illinois Senate for the 47th District since 2002.
Sullivan was elected in 2002, having defeated long time senator Laura Kent Donahue in one of the closest and most expensive senate races that election cycle. Senator Sullivan currently serves as the Senate's Majority Caucus Whip. He also is the chairperson of the Agriculture and Conservation Committee, Vice-Chairperson of Appropriations III Committee; and is a member of the Higher Education and Transportation Committees.
Sullivan defeated Republican Tom Ernst in 2004. His reelection was a targeted race by the Illinois Republican Party. In March 2006 Congressman Lane Evans announced he would be retiring after at the end of his twelfth term. Sullivan entered the special nominating election soon afterward. He lost to longtime Evans aid Phil Hare. Sullivan is up for reelection to the State Senate in 2008.
Sullivan's associated Representatives are Jil Tracy and Richard P. Myers.
Sullivan and his wife Joan live in Rushville and have four children. He received his BA from Quincy College.
