InfoU. S. Representative John F. Tierney is serving his fourth term in Congress representing the Sixth Congressional District of Massachusetts. He is a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, the only New England Member of Congress to serve on that committee. He serves on the Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness and the Subcommittee on Employer-Employee Relations. He is also a member of the House Committee on Government Reform where he is the ranking member on the Subcommittee on Energy Policy, Natural Resources and Regulatory Affairs and serves on the Subcommittee on National Security, Veterans Affairs and International Relations.

Representative Tierney's legislative priorities include strengthening America's public schools; providing access to high quality health care for all Americans, including a Medicare prescription drug benefit for seniors; addressing the workforce development issues of literacy, job-training and life-long learning and providing greater retirement security. He is the author of the States' Right to Innovate in Health Care Act, which would encourage states to develop their own systems of health care coverage for all residents. He is also the author of the Retiree Health Benefits Protection Act, which would prohibit companies from curtailing or eliminating benefits under their retiree health plans after a worker retires.

Congressman Tierney is a strong advocate of a federal partnership with state and local governments in upgrading the nation's schools, and he has joined in sponsoring a measure to strengthen local efforts to provide safe and drug-free schools. In his continuing efforts to reduce class sizes in the early grades and to ensure fully qualified teachers in every classroom, Congressman Tierney has sponsored the Alternative Paths to Teaching Act to encourage America's best and brightest students to enter the teaching profession. He is the chief House sponsor of campaign finance legislation that served as the model for the "Clean Money" law adopted by Massachusetts voters in 1998.

Congressman Tierney's approach to government is an holistic one, as best expressed by Robert F. Kennedy. In his book reflecting his father's philosophy, Make Gentle the Life of This World, Maxwell Taylor Kennedy includes the following quotation:

"Action on any one front alone will not succeed. Providing a man a job, while in my judgment the most important step we can take, will not improve the schools his children attend or assure that medical care will be available even though he can afford it. Building new housing without providing social services or transportation to get to work or accessible health services will result in one slum replacing another. Improving the quality of education or job training without any promise of a job at the end will not ease the dropout rate. But action on all these matters in concert will build a community."

Born in Salem, Massachusetts on September 18, 1951, Congressman Tierney attended public schools in Salem and graduated from Salem State College. He earned a law degree from Suffolk University, and, until his election to Congress in 1996, was a partner in the North Shore community law firm of Tierney, Kalis and Lucas for 22 years. He and his wife Patrice continue to make Salem their home.
