InfoFrom his work as a young deputy sheriff to founding a security company protecting our homes and businesses, Mike Mauer has dedicated his life to keeping Jackson Countians safe.

Mike had a childhood like most boys in Kansas City born after World War II. He grew up at 41st & Holly and later moved to 100th Terrace. His mother worked at home raising the kids and taking care of the house. Mike was the only son and had three sisters who taught him his first lessons on personal safety. He loved the Boy Scouts, becoming an Eagle Scout and a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say at Bartle Scout Ranch.

Mike's father was an attorney, a reserve deputy sheriff and an active Democrat. He taught Mike the importance of public service. Tragically his father died when Mike was only five, but Mike never forgot his lessons on helping his neighbors and community.

After his father's death, his mother went to work to make ends meet as an IBM keypunch operator. She later remarried an architectural engineer for Johnson Controls. His mother now lives at John Knox Village where Mike visits her regularly.

Mike graduated from Rockhurst High School in 1967 and then attended Rockhurst University where he graduated with a degree in business management and a minor in marketing.

During college, Mike learned first hand the importance of the organized labor. He worked for the American Paving and Construction Company on an asphalt crew and was a member of Laborers', Local 663. He later worked as a truck driver for the same company transporting heavy equipment and is a member of Teamsters, Local 541.

After college, Mike was immediately drafted into the armed services. He completed the initial processing and physical, and waited to be sent to basic training. But the Vietnam War was winding down and Mike was reclassified and never called up. Since his father had been a reserve on the sheriff's department, Mike decided to apply and fulfill his duty on the home front.

Mike joined the Jackson County Sheriff's Office in 1971, received his deputy's training and graduated from the Regional Center for Criminal Justice in 1972. He left the sheriff's department in 1974 to join the Independence Police Department as a patrolman.

Mike served the residents of Independence for 20 years as a patrolman, detective and narcotics officer. He received his Missouri Department of Public Safety Certification and graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia in 1981. Mike worked a number of cases from burglary and robbery cases to homicide and drug cases. Mike understood the danger of methamphetamines early and formed a joint task force in Independence to combat meth labs. He was most proud when he solved a crime and helped gain a conviction. Mike retired honorably in 1994.

After retiring from the Independence Police Department, Mike founded a residential and commercial security business. Building on his law enforcement training and experience, Mike built a business from the ground up that protects homes, families and businesses in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

While running his successful business the last 15 years, Mike has continued his commitment to public service. He has run for office when called upon, is an elected Democratic county committeeman, served on the Jackson County Legislature redistricting committee, and was appointed by the mayor to the City of Blue Springs Appearance Review Committee. Through all his professional and personal work, Mike has remained a commissioned deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.

Mike served with distinction as a law enforcement officer, built a successful security business and served his community. Mike Mauer believes that he has been preparing his whole life to be Jackson County Sheriff and wants to use his experience to improve public safety and protect all of Jackson County's families.
