InfoG’day,

My name is Kate Neely and I have lived in the Northern Territory for the past 13 years. I am a lecturer at Charles Darwin University I have a degree in science with a specialisation in aquatic toxicology and have a Masters in Adult Education.

I have been involved as a volunteer in sporting groups (volleyball is my game!), the Arthritis foundation and Amnesty International. I recently spent a year overseas as a volunteer teacher in Tonga and am actively involved with the Melaleuca Refugee Centre.

I want to give you an idea of what I will work for if you vote for me. The following are some of the issues that I see as important for the Territory.

Youth

We know that adolescence is a time of growth and learning. I will work to ensure that there are increased opportunities for our youth to be involved in community building, sports, the arts, and citizenship activities. The clubs and societies that provide these activities help our young people to understand the expectations and benefits of participating constructively in our community.

Planning

The NT needs a proper set of planning procedures. The Greens propose a framework for planning that will make it clear how and when community consultation should be done. This framework would ensure that you have a chance to understand and respond to major and minor developments that might affect you before they are approved.

Education

I will work to create a well resourced, positive education system where parental and community input is encouraged and acted upon. I will work to ensure that students of all ages are given a choice of appropriate, quality educational options respecting their dedication and acknowledging that their hard work now is the basis of the NT’s future. The Greens actively support all our teachers and educators; they thoroughly deserve our appreciation and our respect for their professionalism and the commitment they bring to such an important vocation.

A “Fair Go”

Darwin is a great place to live. I enjoy the benefits of living in a small city with great facilities and a very multicultural feel. However, not everyone has the same opportunities. I believe it is our responsibility to provide assistance and support for all members of our community. This will include:

• Understanding and working to eliminate the causes of poverty and homelessness
• Upholding the rights of refugees and asylum seekers
• Applying the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody
• Providing adequate mental health care facilities
• Supporting lifestyle choices of the aged and people with disabilities
• Being respectful of all individuals and protecting their status as equals within the community

If you would like to discuss any of these issues or you have other important concerns that you’d like to talk to me about please feel free to contact me.

Your politicians are chosen and employed to listen you. I promise that I will do my best to understand and represent you fairly and openly at all times.
