Info | US Congressman, US Senator, California Governor. A practicing lawyer from Ohio, Weller entered politics in 1839 when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives representing Ohio's 2nd District serving until 1845. With the outbreak of the Mexican War, he volunteered for military service and was commissioned a Lieutenant Colonel with the 1st Ohio Volunteers. Distinguishing himself in battle, he returned to Ohio after the war where he made an unsuccessful campaign for Governor in 1848. In 1849 he was appointed by President James Polk to be head of the United States Commission to establish the border between the United States and Mexico, a post he held until his sudden removal a year later. Moving to California, he would be elected to represent the state in the United States Senate from 1852 until 1857. In 1858 he was elected the 5th Governor of California serving until 1860. After briefly serving as United States Minister to Mexico from 1860 to 1861, Weller moved to New Orleans, Louisiana where he practiced law until his death. He was originally buried in New Orleans' Girod Street Cemetery until it was deconsecrated in 1957. His remains were then moved for reburial in a mass grave at Saint John's Cemetery.
